Allvar Gullstrandgymnasiet
Our scholl is situated in the very south of Sweden, in the little town of
Landskrona. It's on the Swedish west coast just opposite Copenhagen,
the capital of Denmark! If you arrive by air at Copenhagen airport the
train will take you to Landskrona in about 80 minutes, across the newly
built Öresund bridge.
Our school is a part of a school union consisting of eight subordinate
upper secondary schools which altogether have just below 2000 students.
The main school building is home for two of the schools, Allvar
Gullstrand and Justus Tranchell, where the general education is
performed and where you will find not only the natural sciences and
social sciences classes, i.e the classes that are preparing the
students for university studies, but also the business/administration,
technical and arts programmes. Here we have some football and golf
classes too, i.e. students who have very much football or golf on their
schedule hopefully to become a successful member of a football team or
a prosperous golf player in the foreseeable future.
Just nearby we have some of the vocational classes in the so called
Enoch Thulin school where you will find the building construction
programme, the electrical engineering and the industry programmes.
Down town there are the child recreation programme, the health care and
the hotel and restaurant programmes in a building called Selma Lagerlöf
school.
In a neighbouring village we have the fifth school, Svalöf school for
the natural resourse programme and the vehical engineering programme..
Then there is a sixth, seventh and eighth school but all these schools
actually belong to the same school union with one managing director on
the very top of it.
This perhaps all sounds very confusing with programmes and different
names but I am sure you will find it rather easy when you come here.
One thing to remember is perhaps that almost 98% of the teenagers
continue to upper secondary/senior high school which means that you
have school education for almost every profession you can find in
Sweden.
The main school building has been renovated and redecorated so now you
will find a top modern school with all the equipment and outfit that
most schools only are allowed to dream of.
Upper secondary consists of three years in Sweden. They start at theage of 16 and graduate at the age of 19, when they leave school foruniversity/high school studies, work, unemployment, sabbatical orfurther education somewhere else. Upper secondary is not a compulsoryschool, the community is forced to give people education up til theyare 16 and after that school is voluntary.
As regards language teaching the students at our school can learnEnglish, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Russian, Latin, Greek andDanish.
Our school days are rather long, we start at 8 in the morning and thelast lesson finishes at 15.45 in the afternoon. We work rather much inproject work, i.e the students work in groups on various subjects butof course we have normal front teaching as well. By the way in Swedenwe always call each other by the first name and "you". Also studentscall their teachers by their first names.
