Meeting in Bremen March 2008
Sunday
We were so exited!!
On Sunday the students from France, Sweden and Czech Republic arrived.
In the evening everyone stayed in their host families. The teachers went to their nearby hotel.
Libor: ”My legs were like stones!”
Björn: “TIRED!!!!”
he added: “But also happy ;)”
Monday
Get to know each other
The polish students and teachers arrived in the early morning.
In school we had some ice-breaking activities to get to know each other (better). We also visited a lesson, a conference for planning the week, played interactive sport games and we had a great sight-seeing tour of Bremen’s city centre.
In the evening we went to a café to talk and just enjoy ourselves.
Emma: “Many bad news.”
Tuesday
Very much confusion
Our conference started at nine o’clock with “Barnga”: A simulation game on cultural clashes. We sat together in groups and were given a set of cards and rules for playing the card game. Every table had different rules, which we didn’t notice at the beginning and therefore the following emotions were strongly recognized:
* Anxiety
* Frustration
* Satisfaction
* Stupidity
* Tension
After talking about the emotions we had, we decided on some principals we need for avoiding the confusion:
-> Always check your assumptions
-> Cooperation is important
-> Communication is also important
-> Not everybody may have the same rules
-> You have to be humble
-> You have to trust
-> You have to be tolerant, accept different rules
-> Assertive people have an advantage
-> You have to be respectful
We compared our principles to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights
and this is our conclusion:
Good rules, like human right … ensure the game is fair by limiting the use of
power by some players over others.
… apply to all players in the same way that
human rights are universal.
… prescribe rights together with duties
(e.g. you have the right to kick the ball but
not a fellow player)
Nils: “Historical.”
Emma: “Long.”
Björn: “Irritating.”
Wednesday
Don’t like your country? What about emigrating?
On Wednesday we were working in the expert groups:
one group had to write a report about “Barnga”, one group had to report the sight-seeing, one group had to write a report on the whole week and one group was asked to write a conclusion about the whole Comenius project.
In the afternoon we took the bus to Bremerhaven and visited the German Emigration Centre. After this we had some time to go shopping.
Kasia: “I felt like I was one of those persons emigrating.”
Nils: “Historical again.”
Thursday
No alcohol…please!
We had to do the rest of the work for the project like finishing the web page and our conclusions. We had a refined lunch break at the Berufsbildungswerk Bremen and enjoyed our delicious food. In the evening it was already time for the great Farewell party. We celebrated our good work and just that we had the chance to get to know each other. Music, by Philipp selected, encouraged (almost) everyone to dance. In fact, the dance floor belonged to Benjamin! At 12 o’clock it was Sarah’s 18th birthday. The night went on, full of frogs…
Everyone: “Happy birthday to you…dear Sarah…!”
Sarah: “Quak.”
Friday
We will stay in contact…ja?!
Our definite last day started at the “Zentrum für Humangenetik” at the university of Bremen, where we all analyzed our DNA. After hours of analysis work (and by summoning up all our body strength) we finally had our DNA. The first tears flew because the Swedish people had to leave Bremen by train at 15:17pm. The students from Poland left at 17:00pm. After saying goodbye the rest of the guys tried to have a great last evening…
Vicky: “Damn, we are the first guests at all!”
Saturday
A short night…
In the very early morning of Saturday at 5:13am the students from Czech Republic had to enter their train back home. The French people had a better lot. They left fit and with (almost) enough sleep at 14:30pm from the Bremen airport.
France: “I don’t want to go back home!”
We hope all of our visitors felt a little bit like France…It was a great week with a lot of fun and it was a pleasure to have all of you here in Bremen!!!
